30: The Complex of Self-reflection, Choice, & Will

Self-reflection not an endless loop

Self-reflection creates an endless loop of self-reflection. The Observer views the Self. The Observer then steps back to view the Observer viewing the Self - which creates an endless regression of Observers viewing Observers.

While on the surface this seems like an infinite regression, it is instead a simple feedback loop. The Observer watches the Self <step 1>, - then becomes the Self <step 2>. The Self then steps out of the Self program, by running the Observer program <step 3> - to become the Observer watching the Self again <step 4> - who quickly inexorably turns into the Self again <step 2> - who, if aware, runs the Observer program again <step 3>, and so forth. This entire process is shown in the diagram below.

Self - Observer - Self - Observer Cycle

The trick in this strictly human situation is not to get stuck for too long in the Self part of the cycle. The Way not to get stuck is to continually rerun the Observer Program, again and again, relentlessly, without fail. This is necessary because the Observer inherently becomes the Self again very quickly without extreme vigilance.

Unreflected Self doesn’t participate in Emergence

The problem with getting stuck in Selfhood is that the unreflected Self doesn’t participate in the emergent features of the Self/Observer mixture.

The unreflected Self is reactive to the environment that has created it - behaving like an automaton to external stimuli.

This is what the greater colony wants -

   For the Self to go along with the Crowd -

       whichever way the Leader leads the Group -

           Even if it is to their own self-destruction.

Reflected Self includes Will - which could choose another Way

In contrast the reflected Self - which includes the Observer - which we will call the greater Self - is able to participate in the emergent features of the synergy between Observer and Self, which includes Will. The exertion of Will might loosen or even break the chains of the Group - so that the Self will go a different direction from the Group - not necessarily - but certainly possibly.

Group Logic certainly does not allow for Personal Will. Group Logic demands that the Group move together as a unit - for Power. If the individual parts move different directions the Group might not have enough cohesiveness to achieve the Group goals. Using parallel terminology from other contexts, the Threshold of Generation for the Group might not be reached if everyone is not focused in the same direction.

We see an example of this in the Dr. Seuss book Horton Hears a Who. Every Who in Who-ville must speak out to avoid the destruction of their whole micro planet.

Logic and Will independent

Logic and Will are independent. While it is useful to use Logic to assist in the decisions that will lead to the exertion of Will, Logic doesn’t lead to Will. Will is not logical. Logic is based in predestination, because all logical choices are automatic. Logic has no will, no choice, as there is only one logical conclusion.

Will = Not Logic = ~ Logic

Will => Choice

Logic = Not Choice = ~ Choice

Lesser Self, without Will, perfect to serve System

Because the unreflected or lesser Self has no Will, it is incredibly limited and not complete - the perfect Cell to serve the System.

Greater Self = Observer * Lesser Self

The Greater Self is the combination of Observer and the lesser Self. This allows the Self to transcend the chains of the lesser Self to become the greater Self. Of course this greater Self quickly degenerates into the lesser - unless constantly observed and supervised. As soon as Self-reflection stops the limited Self reappears - reactive to external circumstance - exploited by one and all. Like a disobedient child, the lesser Self needs to be constantly observed in order to avoid victimization.

Function of Observer to purify assumptions of Lesser Self

One of the functions of the Observer is to purify the underlying assumptions of the lesser Self by bringing them into consciousness. Then when this lesser Self reappears - without the Observer to self reflect - automatic decisions will be made on a sounder footing. In other words, the Observer attempts to rewire the lesser Self.

It is important to note that the Observer is by no means entirely objective, but actually exists in his very biased state, colored by the preconceptions of the lesser Self. Hence the Observer in purifying the lesser Self is simultaneously purifying his own biases towards the lesser Self or Person.

The Self Ore purified of Person equals Being

Lesser Self thinks he is his Person

Remember this lesser Self is the unpurified self. As unpurified ore, the self still thinks that he is his Person. Thus the function of the Observer is to act as the complete system towards the logically consistent system of the lesser self – the polluted, or unpurified self. They are all the same.

Note that this self-ore is not really the Person. The Person is actually that which the lesser Self is purified of to realize the greater Self.

Self Ore - Person = Self

Aside: As mentioned, because of the objectification implied by Self - we prefer to use the term Being instead. Plus the world ‘Self’ is super charged with connotation - which further confuses the communication. Thus the greater Self is Being purified of Person, while the lesser Self is Being unpurified of Person. The revised equation is shown below.

Self-Ore - Person = Being
